I mean, the whole point of NYC is that you put up with the unnecessary crappiness of it in order to sneer at others who question it?

People who build their entire identity around being a “New Yorker” are the worst. Both transplants and native born.

I’m guessing you left
I left for a couple weeks, but came back. I'm also from here, so I've been through a lot in my lifetime
Wtf does anyone care where people are from? From NYC? Cool, I don't give a shit.
Grew up in the NY area spending tons of time in the city and lived/worked in NYC for several years before b school. I’ve also lived in a somewhat rural part of the country as a working adult. Been happy in both places.
This whole NYC thing is like so many other life decisions that require sacrifice. (Having kids, having a demanding job, putting in the time to really be there for your kids, living in an expensive city, etc.) You have to convince yourself that your choice, while difficult, is better than any other option. Of course there’s no way to really prove this- you just have to trust your own priorities. This is fine when you’re surrounded with other people who made the same decision, but gets dicey when other people who are similar to you did the same math and got a different answer. People get prickly and judgemental of one another.
When I lived in NYC, I loved feeling like my city was the birthplace of everything cool. When I lived in rural Virginia, I hated how my NYC friends acted like only a life lived in NYC could possibly be worthwhile- my life was great, I had time and space for actual hobbies, and introspection, and the outdoors!
This is a time when everyone feels unstable and is second guessing their decisions. We need to remember that other people’s decisions are not an implicit disapproval of our own. We’re all just trying to live our lives out here! Something you can do anywhere...

Even “NYC tough” cant overcome having to pay $2000 for a 300 sq ft studio with cockroaches.
Once those rents come down, people will come back. Until then, nah.
NYC is a city for the rich these days. Hoping out of all this chaos, that will level out a little.
I mean this post is dumb. But also, didn’t people leaving NY seed a bunch of infections elsewhere?
I’m not from nor do I live in NY
The only time I’ve seen NYers (both transplants and natives) shitting on other people for leaving is when those people complain that NYC is “over.” I have no problem with anyone doing what they need to do to feel safe/stable/healthy during this time; I myself left for a couple months. But if you think NYC is permanently “over” just because we’re going through a tough year, I’m not sure why you were here to begin with.

“Safety reasons” lol

You’re being so emotional, get a grip. The virus is everywhere. Yes, the wording is funny *to me.*
NYC for the rich right now? Nah, the rich are the ones who left!
OP some people have families here and don’t want to abandon them
I think people should live wherever they want, even without a reason. Hell, the more people leave NY, the more affordable it is for those who stay. Win-win.
Totally agree. It’s like miserable people who brag about how much they work because they’re workaholics and think that anyone who works less than them is below them (another cringe but all-too-common element of the New York way of life). Let them bask in their misguided/jaded ideologies while you go ahead and enjoy your meaningful and significantly-less-miserable life.
Native NYCer’s who use the term “NYC tough” are the cringiest.
What’s tougher tho: NY Tough or Ford Tough?
