Why do accountants box themselves to industry? There are so many more opportunities in different areas where accountants thrive. I have never worked in industry & have had many experiences that were very rewarding, fun work. I'd say expand your idea of what you can do and pursue those things...Finance Operations, Accounting Operations, Business Operations, Financial Planning & Analysis, Regulatory/Audit Compliance...I have worked in all of these areas for different companies, with varying career progression, as an accountant. I don't like Big4...AT ALL. Everyone seems miserable. Pay is great and work life balance has been good.
I apply for roles that "get my foot in the door" with no immediate expectation to break the bank...and, once in, I do exemplary work to influence perception and acquire advocacy from my direct supervision. In my experience, I usually have to take a small step back in pay to infiltrate a new space/role (not a large reduction, maybe $5k) but within 1 to 1.5 years, I'm able to effectively articulate how I've quickly learned and consistently made impact, which gives me the leverage to begin applying for other internal roles of interest that progress my career and salary. It's been a strategy and approach that has worked for me...embrace maximizing outcomes in those areas that peers prefer not to do. I consistently raise my hand to do those things that others hate or don't want to take the time to learn or do, which introduces operational awareness that peers don't have. I have only realized success by being interested in other areas beyond my accounting competency.
Clearly you haven't seen The Accountant movie
That’s me buddy
The people defending accounting so bad must really have nothing else going for them other than work lmao wild

Leave.
Whatever your heart desires. I don’t know you, so how can I even have an idea what to suggest.
Whatcha wanna do instead? My wife had the same realization (plus everyone was just toxic) and is now looking outside of accounting too!

Read the room. People are dying to get hired for jobs.
and that’s supposed to mean that people aren’t allowed to be unhappy with their jobs just because others are trying to get hired? you can be appreciative for having a job that allows you to pay for necessities without liking what you do.
not gonna lie it can be boring but my reason for staying in this industry is "i spent 4 years of my life in university majoring in accounting and i dont know anything besides that...i think i dont have much choice"
Lol
