Hey Fishbowl community! I currently work as a Sales Support Specialist with 3 YOE working at a SaaS company. My dream career is to work at Microsoft or Google. I am open to different opportunities that exceed 80k+ per year. I also have a BA in Business Admin. If anyone can refer me to a great remote position I would greatly appreciate it! 😀

Couldn’t agree more in that there’s a gross ego-stoking component to it all, but I guess the running, legitimizing theory on the throughline that makes it all hang together is that awards are how agencies advertise themselves to CMOs, and the awards that really matter require demonstration of the work’s effectiveness in driving actual business results.

So as a CCO, you’re saying you don’t push for award winning work?
Because while I agree, the obsession with awards ALWAYS starts at the top. It’s hard to read your comment and believe you’re the one CCO with unimpeachable taste and awesome people skills who didn’t benefit from this system, and not the typical CCO who thinks they’re great with people because everyone’s nice to them and all about awards until it threatens their job security.
i think it’s great to get recognition for outstanding work. and i am happy for my teams to have that.
what i am saying is your ability to win awards is no indication for your leadership skills or value you add for the organization overall. but we often use it a marker or criteria for people to advance.
Never forget that Burger King wrapped a Whopper in rainbow paper and was awarded Cannes Lions Marketer of the Year.
Apart from Anselmo who has his own agency after, those other creatives that made this cringe work flopped in several places they go to.

Nothing says “I care too much about awards” more than a Friday evening or Saturday morning post about not caring about awards.
Without Cannes etc, there’s very little reason to want to do exciting work. We should be grateful we have it and that creatives still give a f.

The market is demanding exciting work though. Because if the market demanded that we just regurgitate the brief in a straight way, agencies wouldn’t exist. Or they’d be much cheaper.
Did you see how local NYC pizzerias who have celebrities on the wall replaced those celebrities with 911 First Responders for the 2024 anniversary?
Neat idea right?
Until you realize the idea came from Rethink and they will submit it in every show they have an award for.
Fucking gross

You should change your job title to Chief Effectiveness Officer.

Nothing gives me the ick more than grown adults who say, “ick.”
Co-founder, you may need to see a specialist about that, I'm pretty sure that's not how most people go to the toilet.
We convinced marketers that the most creative execution is what sells the most product/services. This is what we have to live with

Studies used to show that award-winning work is more effective. Now they show that it isn’t more effective. No surprise. Most of the work that wins is scammy virtue signalling nonsense that doesn’t build the brand.

You’re a CCO. You’re in charge of promotions. What a bizarre thing to post, considering your title.

I used to think advertising was creative until I actually started creating my own stuff outside of it.
It’s laughable to me how many people high up in this industry think they’re doing groundbreaking creative work when they’re at best just being slightly more interesting shills for their brands than the next shop over. People need to get a grip.
Very much so. Creative leaders need to be able to deal with clients on real client work, a skill so few of them have. There's nothing more painful than trying to engage a primadonna, awards-obsessed creative leader who doesn't get this. Please stop putting people like this in positions of ultimate authority.

I am very happy i’ve only worked at an agency that deemphasizes this and is not necessarily tied to promotions. Feels like a layer of stress that I’m glad to have dodged.
Only happens in creative depts. no one seems to give a hoot if you have award winning work from strategy, account, production

My biggest ick… is CCOs that still say ick. Unless you are a 14 year old CCO, then that’s awesome! And I support your premature rocket ride to the pinnacle of the corporate-land stratosphere. All fun here. Please don’t FB punish me. Just a friendly hip check.
This is nothing. You should have been around in the early 90’s. Award shows every other week and there was one where the people stole some of the awards. Check out the 91’ Clios if you want a good bathroom read.
