I went from implementation consulting to a SE position at an implementation partner. We didn’t resell any license and only provided implementation services.
I left that position with a whole new appreciation for individuals in sales. It’s a much more fast paced environment and you need to be incredibly responsive to any new opps. In implementation roles, you can afford to not reply to that email that comes in at the end of the day. With sales the pressure is always on.
I also felt like sales was much less forgiving in the sense that your opportunity to leave an impression on the prospect was much shorter than the opportunity to build credibility in implementation.
I learned a lot and I’m definitely glad that I did it. I feel like I now have the skill set to break out on my own now if I wanted to.
I went from tech implementation to SE. I loved the move. High pressure but certainly rewarding. You do everything you would normally do as an SI (discovery, design, POC, etc) without actually having to build working software. So much better.
Funny enough, we used to say “friends don’t let friends do delivery.” If that tells you anything.
