This is odd to me. I was looking and emails and my assistant (a long tine ago) signed me up for this thing called Lawclerk. It was after I left big law had my first company, but I looked at it just because and I see like $80 per hour to do stuff. I pay my housekeeper more than that. That to me is odd, and some of the stuff they’re wanting is actually, at least to me, looks like a lot of work.

Paying a housekeeper more than $80/hour is what’s odd here

$80x2000 =$160,000.00. Sure, many lawyers make less than that. If, as you said, it was a long time ago, i assume you mean somewhere about 10-15 years ago. My pay (not including benefits). was certainly less than $160k 15 years ago. Heck, my total pay (including everything) wasn’t much more than 160k and i was not just expected to work (but expected to bill) 2000 hours per year. To bill 2000 hours per year, i was certainly working no fewer that 2800 hours. At 80 per working hours, i would have made some where in 220k, which i wasn’t making (as total comp) until about 2008.

There are lawyers making $20 an hour doing doc review. There are lawyers at ID firms in local markets making $65k a year with 2200 hour target.

I live in VHCOL and paying $100 an hour is not normal for house cleaning. 30-60 is normal.

I wish attorneys had a union to prevent race to the bottom pay

Y’all pay by the hour?

The rate is only a little low in my opinion. If I was charging about $100 an hour it would align with what I was making at a law firm as an employee. I was thinking of taking up some jobs on Lawclerk because I have an obvious pattern of receiving case referrals from older attorneys that have directly seen my work product. It’s a networking thing for me. Everyone has their own reason.

Advice Request: Started my career litigating. Switched to niche transactions (so about half and half at this point). Halfway through a year long sabbatical and reevaluating what I want to do (left before jumping to Senior associate). I’d like to get into litigation again in a practice group I don’t have experience in. Any suggestions on how to do this? How to approach firms and partners etc? Past 2 firms on my resume are top 30.

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

Any advice on how to deal with a partner/boss who is shifting all responsibility to me with zero guidance, no mentoring, and an unwillingness to discuss the issues?
