This might be a dumb question… is it a conflict of interest for a firm’s general counsel to also take on client cases like any other lawyer of the firm? Or should they stay out of traditional client based practice all together to avoid potential future conflicts of interest should that client sue the firm or something? Also, I may just be over thinking the risk way way too much and maybe people do both things all the time, hahah

At most firms, people do both.

At huge law firms, GC likely only acts as GC given the amount of work and issues.

At my firm 40 lawyer firm, the actual GC work for the GC likely only takes up 10% of his time. He litigates the other 90%.

I am lead counsel on a case - we’re suing 3 businesses and my supervisor is a named incorporator of one of the businesses although he is not an officer. He is asking me to bring the file and meet with him about the progress of the case. I reminded him of the conflict and he stated that the conflict was resolved because he also has a claim against 1 of the companies that he recently filed separately. I don’t see how that resolved the conflict…and he’s fully pressuring me to meet. How to respond?
