What are your long term career goals?
How will working in eviction defense help you to accomplish your long-term goals? Yes, you will be gaining courtroom experience in this role and you will be learning how to deal with clients. However, you won't be handling environmental law cases nor will you be in a position to network with environmental lawyers.
I'd imagine eviction defense doesn't pay very well, so you're not going to be in a position to pay off your loans quickly before making the transition to environmental law.
It’ll get you into court and help you learn to deal with people in tough circumstances. It won’t help much if your goal is in house or a big name firm. But if you’re interested in working in any consumer-facing law, it’ll be great experience.
Hey, solid experience at a first gig is worth the time and energy you put into it. Do incredibly well at the job, even if it feels frustrating or under-compensated. I wish I’d worked harder at being excellent at my earlier jobs rather than just sufficient. You will be thankful down the road for putting your energy into the work. You’ll also find that helping people in those circumstances can be really gratifying.
Aspirant:
It will help you if you want to advocate for individual rights under the constitution. And under 47, there is a hectic assault on those rights. Hence, there is much work to do here. Also, it will prepare you for litigation under 42 USC S. 1983. I see this as an extremely profitable area because of the assault on Due Process. I think Tenants Rights Litigation can give rise to 1983 Litigation. Discuss this with your employer.
But, if you want to work for a large, conservative firm with a substantial clientele of commercial interests, then, this work might alienate you from potential employers.
Finally, when Jesse Jackson rescued a USAF Pilot from Libya during the Reagan Administration, I wondered whether the president would host
Mr. Jackson for the standard Rose Garden celebration. President Reagan did so under the banner, “You Can’t Argue With Success.”
This is to say that if you build a strong enough winning record; if you are more than prepared enough every time you go to court; if this job is a calling and not just a check; then, even the conservatives will stand up take notice. In other words, extreme excellence has a way of “trumping,” narrow interests. Everybody loves a winner.
Litigation is a tool of equalization. Are you excellent? Are you David? If so, take the job.

Hi Law Clerk, I did tenants rights work for several years. If you are in NYC, make sure it is a unionized job so you can ensure you have rights as a worker and you are able to set boundaries. You will have the opportunity to gain a lot of negotiation skills and some drafting/trial skills that are transferable to other areas of litigation.
Nice. Well, it is incredibly important work and if you want to hone negotiation skills, it will allow you that opportunity. If you want trial experience, I would recommend family.
Are you in SF? There are a lot of tenant attorneys here but you’ll get a lot of court experience
I’m in north county San Diego, the job is in Orange County
