Following. Always wondered if it’s better client side/ less demanding
Right now I’d say so. So many agency layoffs.
Pro
I went client side two years ago and can confirm it’s better/more stable. The work isn’t quite as flashy but the pay is better, the benefits are better, I finish at 5pm and my weekends are all mine.
Stability?
What’s that?
The answer depends on the company
It depends. Company growth is one consideration. Any company that is consistently growing will be better off/more stable than one that is stagnating. My fist hand experience has been that growth is the religion of business, and an indicator of, “Are we relevant?”. The reason so many agencies are struggling now is because the the way that clients use/buy marketing services has changed so much, so growth, or even stable revenue, is hard to find. A second consideration is simply orientation. Keurig Dr. Pepper recently closed down their in house operation despite its strong reputation. Many clients would have seen an in house agency like this as a competitive asset. Others see it as simply a “support function”. KDrP must have thought they could be more efficient/nimble buying from the outside.
Most definitely, yes. You'll have a life!
Yes more stable. At a minimum, agency is reliant on the whim of clients plus dealing with office politics to be liked enough to be valued regardless. Brand side you still have to worry about the politics and being seen as valuable, but the core of your job is safe. More money, better work life balance generally, being the client makes it worth the move too
Depends how they are financed, IMO. If it’s established and private, it’s probably more stable. If it’s new and always looking for another round of funding, it’s probably not very stable. If it’s publicly traded, they’ll axe you in a heartbeat to inflate the stock price.
I thought so, but we’ve had 3 layoffs in 4 years I believe. Still feels «safer» than agencies somehow, but might be survivor bias. 😵💫
My agency (global, creative lead, nyc office) has had 3 layoffs in one year. So def seems safer on the other side. You hiring?
Pre 2019 it didn’t ‘depend’— it was definitely more stable.
But now it’s shakey on every side.
I would love to go client side but can never find anyone hiring
I’ve never worked client side, but was a liaison between Production and Agency within a dedicated AOR branch. Even that switch was 100% less stress on my system.
