Show them how hip and cool you are by sending some relatable memes in the Slack channel, that'll show them! Just kidding, don't do that they'll probably laugh at you even more. Why do you even care if they think you're old? You should just own it, you do have more seniority and we all eventually do fall out of touch with young people. It's part of growing, you can't hold on to the past forever, be secure in who you are.
Who cares, let them think it! As long as they're not treating you disrespectfully, they're allowed to think they're the coolest thing since sliced bread and everyone older than them is an out of touch fossil. It's the way the world works and is nothing to take personally.
They’re young and out of touch.
Off topic, frankly I’m over it with trying to make employees feel good or even like me. We’re here to make a really cool product for customers. And I give people great jobs. They can think what they want as long as they are engaged in the work and stay in touch with the customer needs. Anything else is just noise
Amen
A variation on the "who cares" theme. Your strength is your experience and knowledge of the company you and the youngsters work for. Your secret weapon is your life experiences that they can only hope to achieve if they don't fry their brain on drugs and alcohol because they think that's how to be cool, have fun, and be young. Don't try to be their BFF. Don't wear mini-skirts, pierce your nose, and speak in unintelligible slang. If they disrespect you, for whatever reason, you are their superior and you should not be shy about "making an example." No heads on pikes outside the break room, mind you, but there are less extreme ways to make the point that needs to be made. If you tell them to do something and they don't, take disciplinary action. If you tell them to do something and they say, "Why?" just channel Mama and Daddy -- "Because I said to."
How does this problem manifest in your day to day
Who cares? Our job is to inspire and lead. Their opinion doesn’t matter.
