16 months since I sent out my first application after being laid off. 450 applications so far. Been a designer since the first Obama administration.
Thank you for asking! It’s been a lot of up and down for me. I just got a contract role and I’m excited about it! Not sure where it will lead, but it’s been a great change and I enjoy every single person I’ve met so far. I was laid off and out of work for almost 4 months before finding this.
Brand new UX designer here! Coming fresh off the Google UX design certificate. Got a solid portfolio but with no solid deal world experience, things are looking a little bleak right now. For all my experienced and seasoned UX designers, any advice on handling the job market right now or anything to be able to increase my chances of being able to break in anywhere?
Oh, it's been a disaster! I decided to take a break after a surgery and moving to another country and AI turned this market upside down in meantime. It's been a year since my last employment and I started looking again 3 months ago... Few interviews, mostly being ghosted
Oh I thought you meant ai is taking over product design jobs but yeah it has changed the requirements quite a bit. But companies need to be realistic ai tools aren’t even hard to learn

For the UX/UI space, it's been rough. Was trying to transition into the role but doesn't seem like that's as feasible at this point so am actually pivoting back to the industry where I have more experience but am also worried that I'm not as competitive of an applicant since I've been out of work in that industry for roughly 2 years now. Trying to bank on previous clients I've worked on and leverage existing relationships to get back into things but yea it's rough. :/
15 years in design and I find myself applying (and being rejected) to jr-mid roles after a year of time off (medical and relocating). I only started applying a month ago cause I didn't had the visa yet, about 70 applications, 4 interviews and about 20 rejections so far. I just arrived from an case review presentation and it went so bad I came home thinking if I was capable of making good hamburgers at McDonald's.
I was "quiet fired" in December after 15+ years of successful service with the same company (I'm a female over 50).
In January, my new manager told me I HAD to transfer departments or be let go. There are no other jobs in the company that are even close to what I do for work.
Since then, I've been looking. I hold a couple of highly sought-after certifications and am headhunted multiple times per week, sometimes within a day.
I rewrite my resume, craft a cover letter, sent it off, and then... nothing. At one point, a company owner reached out directly to me and I went through three rounds of interviews, two of them 2 hours each. He sent an email afterward letting me know he didn't see "an immediate fit".
I'm considering just starting my own thing at this point.
AI is a tool, and it's one I've already leveraged in my work. I can see that continuing.
Starting to feel like I'll never land another design job—especially when more senior designers are applying for entry- and mid-level roles.
