Today someone new asked me what I do and I genuinely blanked for a second. Because it's not just one thing. Some days it's research, other days editing, sometimes problem-solving, occasionally holding things together with tape and luck. How do you explain your job?

I just say I work with words. I don't necessarily want to get into all the nuance of what I do, and a lot of people have preconceived notions about working in media anyway. Instead, I'm just the words gal 😊 that's how my friend described me too.

I agree with you that explaining my job requires a few minutes, and also checking what the person knows in order to tell them something they would understand. However, suppose I don't want to spend my time. In that case, I just want to use a nice one-liner to explain what a manager would do, so I say something that solves problems people didn’t know they had, in real time with my team,” If the person really wants to know, then I would explain to them some key responsibilities I have.

My explanation would depend on who was asking. If it was a new employee, like in your case, I'd give a friendly and moderately detailed answer. In a lot of cases I'd just say something vague.

The wordy one. Plain and simple

1) I know that most of you will say that buying an expensive engagement ring is a waste and bad, etc. so let’s start with the assumption that I don’t care and it’s happening
2) does it make sense to finance an engagement ring purchase or buy in cash? If financing, how much would you have to put down for a ~$30k ring? (If you’re upset by this number just replace ring with car or education or wedding or whatever you feel good about lol)

One of my direct reports has asked about going part time. They currently manage special reports in a bi-weekly publication, working closely with sales, freelance writers, and an internal designer. Job duties are primarily project management and editing/proofreading. As the first read on articles, they need to have an understanding of the material (business/regulation). Has anyone had experience with job sharing in this type of a role?

Journalism is the best job in the world but I feel like people are less likely to take my work seriously because I am female. So it's like they automatically think the only things I would be good at writing about are fluffy little human interest stories. I'm just a reporter like everyone else. Is there some way I can tell my supervisor that yes, I do like those stories, but I like being a serious reporter even more?
