I believe we are in an over-saturated market. Portfolio schools continue to pump out new graduates while seniors are fighting to keep their jobs. All the while new start-ups aren’t taking many risks with their marketing. So they start an in-house team of two people or put a job up at the likes of 99 Designs.
Meanwhile, we are fighting amongst each other to get into the same agencies and work on the same brands. I live in South Florida and I’m always seeing the same jobs posted by non-agencies. Most people stay at their agency, even if it’s miserable, because there aren’t many options. Also, the benefits of working here at a PublicisSapient or Y&R Bravo beat that of a start-up paying $40-50K.
In short, I just don’t think there’s enough work at agencies to support all the talent out there. Whoopi! Your agency won new business... meaning you took food from another person’s table and 20 were laid off at Agency B. That’s not the case in fields like healthcare or say a car service shop. Those are fields where the need is greater than the options.
I've been trying to break in to an agency since art and ad school for the last 1.5 years yet keep coming up against these younger kids. Competition is over saturated. It's not a niche field like when I began pursuing it.
Maybe the gig economy is what makes the job numbers look good. Americans continue to be jobless but Uber and TaskRabbit gigs are widely available.
That’s the prob Strategist 1 - they changing the goal posts on IC status - and if you read the CA posting you’ll see just have much. And you know what they say: what starts in California doesn’t stay in California. Oh wait...
I hear coal mining is where it’s at.
Traditional media is being cut more and more with each passing year, it’s all going to digital. Which would’ve been fine, but Facebook and Google control 3/4ths of the planet’s digital media. Guess what, while we were enamored by social media, they figured out ways to undercut agencies and sell media directly to clients, totally bypassing agencies.
Or to put it another way, we got f#cked by Zuck.
Agree. It's an odd economy right now. Low unemployment...low interest rates...but that is not the case on the ground. I'm definitely struggling. To quote Paul Krugman, "If you're not terrified right now...you're not paying attention."
Glad i am not the only one feeling so. I ve been on the full time job hunt for a while but no luck yet. Holding onto my min wage job. What seemed like easy entry level jobs in marketing are even getting harder to come by
Yea it’s frustrating to hear the constant drumbeat of how great things are yet the reality in the agency world is quite different. Where are all these jobs?
Isn’t possible (again) that you need to look beyond what happens in big cities?
Louisville, Cincinnati, and Indianapolis are also dry as a bone. Don’t think those count as big cities, lol
Can confirm. Am molasses and fielding multiple offers right now. #drip
