I think we are in the era of the small independent places. Mostly, big places are suffering and not doing enough good work.
A copywriter who did great work for me at a smallish but creatively hot Philadelphia agency in the late 80s was hellbound to "break into the NY agency big time," at at length a headhunter landed him a spot at Y&R. Checking in on him later, he told me glumly that after a full year there, he had added precisely one print ad (for the unsuccessful relaunch of Chef Boyardee Pizza Mix) to his book. And that was when the afterglow of the Mad Man era still lingered over Madison Avenue.
