Very strong chance I’ll make partner @D in 2020... BCG just reached out for an interview... BCG comp/brand would be awesome but not sure I want to start over. My understanding is that (cont)

If you are less than one year from partner why would you leave Deloitte to try to rebuild your network at BCG in which you are behind other Principals who already have established relationships and support?

Seems it would be easier to make partner at D which is almost just as good. The risk adjusted return doesn’t seem to support the switch if you expect to be a partner in 24 months.

Principal is one step from partner so don’t angst about a temporary Consultant role PROVIDED your agreement is explicitly that you are a Principal, you’re just “playing C” to get a view of how the work gets done. And really, you should. As a Principal, you will need to oversee Cs, which is that much harder if you don’t understand the proprietary way we do things.

And yeah, it’s a bit of a shock to the system. I was a lateral hire, lower level than you, and it’s a big learning curve. But...the prestige is a thing ;)

likesmart

Yeah you’re too far along the race to go backwards now. I’ve worked for D and now McK and the “prestige” part matters far more to a youngster than it does to someone higher up. If you enjoy what you’re doing at D, at best BCG matches that. If there are things you hate at Deloitte, chance are BCG has many of those same things. Too much risk, stay where you are and enjoy the fruits of your hard work.

likehelpful

Mck 2, which group were you at D?

smart

Yeah making Principal at BCG is definitely no guarantee you’ll make Partner, particularly when starting from scratch with your network. Doesn’t seem worth the risk if you’re in a good position to quickly make Partner at D

likesmarthelpful

Make partner at D, then if you decide to move anywhere else it will be for a lateral also partner level move. Don’t risk it if you’re that confident about the promotion.

The principle/AP level is the hardest at these firms, in my opinion. It is also the most reliant on relationships (both up and down). You are dependent on partners to bring you into their existing relationships and pitches for new relationships so you can prove that you can build a book of business. Everyone else getting promoted to principle has had 4 years of building relationships with partners. Proving themselves. You are coming in cold. Home grown principles have also worked with dozens of consultants who will be transitioning to manager so they will have a leg up staffing teams.

Even though I’ll be brought in as Principal they’d put me in a consultant role for my first case and make me work up the ladder.. have heard their way of working will be a real shock from what I’m used to @D
