Went through 11 different companies’ interview processes before landing a job out of consulting. I thought it was going to be easier, but what I realized is a lot of companies place more emphasis on..

The price they have to pay than the skills you bring. The job market is great, but everyone these days has a marketable skill set so there’s tons of competition. Everyone thinks they’ll get a giant bump after consulting but that’s not the reality for the majority. I got a $3k raise.
Sharing this for those that think they’ll get a massive bump after consulting. Good for you if you do but I’d say you’re in the minority. And for those that get discouraged after one or two interviews don’t go their way. Don’t give up

BCG1: not trying to demean the value of it, but the one former product and delivery analyst at McKinsey I know said he felt like a second class citizen and ended up exiting the firm

like

My approach was to get at least close to my base pay. It’s surprising how much consulting pays (higher) and the only higher payers are tech cos like google, Facebook etc

Yes. As a M most jobs are at D level in mid sized firms paying $160-$170ish. I’m trying to look at firms with significant upside (RSUs, etc..) to make up for it. Makes me feel better to remember some of my B-school colleagues are still pulling low 6 figures

When I see my peers clearing that it makes me wonder what I’m doing wrong.

I'm in a similar situation. Would be an amazing long term opportunity but initially would have to take a $40k paycut.

I had an offer that was 38% over my TCC from a non-target tech company. (I'm a manager). It was a one click apply on LinkedIn. They're out there! Don't give up!

like

I did not. NYC, manager, C&M/digital customer. I may change my tune after Monday, but a couple months out from turning it down and not a single regret. Offer was from a mid+ size SaaS/PaaS/social company. I didn't see a long-term life there, and I'm a long-term guy - and frankly, a corporate guy, too. For now, I'm just bored. Someone hire me and let me sell the shit out of your digital work?

I think you consider the opp in light of whether it could take you to your next job. Money is something you’ll earn but if the trade off of lower money now equals better career progression and aligns to your interests, I’d think one step ahead

That’s a hard hit of reality right in the main deck

Thanks for this, interviewing is slow and irritating.

Not always true. My clearance level is very much valued in the DC area. Left Deloitte last year and received a 28% raise. I was being payed fairly.

D4 - why company do you work for now?

Outliers do occur, but on average I agree with OP

Yeah you take the exit for work/life balance not for pay bump based on what I’ve seen

Appeared for KPMG interview 45 days back. HR is intentionally delaying offer release. Done with 2nd round of interview in last week of July. My Lwd is in oct first week. She took documents on 23rd Aug and did salary discussion a week later. And giving shitty excuses like waiting for approval. Approver is on leave bla bla. Has anyone faced such issue with this company? I never expected such a shitty and worst recruitment process from a BIG4

I had my first round of interviews with Mckinsey last Friday. the first case was a disaster but the second case + both of the PEI were quite good. The thing is, my other lead progressed very well, it's also in the Private Equity space, an Investor Relations manager role, boring but good money. they pressed me to go through all the process by the end of the week but I won’t be able to advance much with McKinsey by then…Super stressed, what should I do?

Did an interview yesterday that was supposed to be behavioral, but turned out to be more like the case interviews I did in undergrad. I think I showed off my business knowledge, but he kept harping on my lack of an official framework (vs me saying "I'd explore it from different stakeholder perspectives: customer, line employee, management"); pretty sure he considered it a failure.
