Wanted to get everyone's thoughts on this short term vs long term decision; currently I'm a consultant making 100k. Friend just got a job offer from another competitor for 150k senior consultant. I won't hit senior until summer 24. My thought process is when I hit senior in 2 year I can apply for a manger role elsewhere for more. Should I follow suit as my friend and run or stay the course?

Many places won’t hire you as a manager unless you have a manager title already, so keep this in mind when making your decision. That jump is possible but it’s difficult

It might be a better decision to stay until you make manager (will take time, I know), and THEN your exit opportunities will really be prime

like

It seems like nowadays all of the studies say you should leave and will get paid more.

IMO, that could work but staying and growing your relationships and experience at one firm has a lot of advantages. You have to really assess your situation. The jump could be advantageous and a 50% bump sounds awesome.

Good luck in your decisions

I would apply for senior consultant roles and see if you can make it now

like

I mean, if money is your objective, just calculate what will net you more. A fast raise now, or later

Building mangers isn't very lucrative, but if you don't have the skills or training, you aren't qualified.

like

If it doesn't burn any bridges, if it's possible, and if it's what you want for yourself—

You could apply for SC elsewhere for that salary jump, become M there, then boomerang back for M at first company and negotiate for more. You may end up with a higher salary than if you were to work your way up within the same company since it's easier to get a salary jump when you're jumping companies than when you get promoted within. It's also not always terrible for the company you start with if they get you back in the end. Maybe not much loyalty there, but at the end of the day they're all jobs. Jobs that companies can easily find replacements for if you leave, if that is guilt-tripping you. But basically do whatever you think you'll regret less later 🙂

If money increase is what you are after, unfortunately, you need to move after 2-3 years. There is more money for new experienced hires then for those already there getting raises. They are betting on you staying because you like it there and don't want to leave. Never a bad thing to look, but if you are going to look be sure you are ready to move and change for the right dollars.

like

Do what works for you, but it sounds like you should focus on being the best you can be at your current role so you get promoted. Given the economic downtown that will be happening, jumping around will be tougher. That happens every recession. You don't want to be the new guy in that situation, as you'll be the first one to be considered for dismissal in a downturn. Focus on being a differential player where you are. Money will come. You still at the very beginning of your career. Good luck!
