I think you’d know if you were fired. Behavior or performance concerns leading up to it, missed goals, missed deadlines, etc.
I’d say it was a layoff in an effort to downsize. A lot of small/growing organizations unfortunately run into this issue where they over hire to align with anticipated company growth, then need to cut down and “bring it down to earth” in a way when the numbers don’t match their expectations.
I’d explain it just like that; org change, redundancy mitigation, etc. Not uncommon so you won’t get a lot of push back.

Just say you were laid off. That’s the truth
I don't dwell on it during interviews, I simply say I was part of a recent RIF at my former company. Also, prior to this small company I joined and worked at for 15 months, I was employed for 7 years at a FF500 company.
