I enjoy the funding that CTE receives but sometimes my class is a catch all. It’s an elective so the counselors don’t always respect the prerequisite classes or skills. Every year, I have to verify this on my own quickly and before classes get too far a long.
I find that other subject areas get preferential treatment. For example, guidance appts, nurse wellness checks, speech/language services, and anything else you can think of are always scheduled during my class period, not during History, English, Science, or Math.
Omg sooooo true!! And really - CTE is the class that builds upon all the basics taking learning to the next level. That’s why I believe CTE is more important than AP.
I’m late to that party, but I’m my experience, CTE is not prioritized. They’re the first to lose instructional time or be treated like less important subjects. In my area, funding for it exists but not on the level necessary for truly awesome programs. Also my state has turned to emergency means of filling CTE positions due to the teacher shortage which has led to being treated less professionally overall. I think CTE deserves more respect, because it’s great :)

Thank you for the support! It’s sad that this happens to us, especially when we can support the content of academic courses pretty well. Fortunately, it seems like more funding is being allocated to this work, but whether it’ll reach schools is still a mystery.
CTE isn’t valued as it should because CTE sucks at self promotion. We shouldn’t blame anyone but ourselves.
Everyone needs to know math and you need to graduate with calculus. Science - we’ll that’s the new math. And you need to know about history bc history repeats itself and English - well that’s just priority 1. Puh-leze.... Antiquated thinking.
CTE is a combination of ALL of these subjects. We are like all of these classes rolled into one and CTE teaches students why each of the core subjects is important to the end result. CTE is the application of calculus, it utilizes scientific testing to QC a job, it looks to the past for inspiration to innovate and it uses English (in my classroom) to effectively communicate findings and results. The core teachers should look us to CTE teachers as gurus. But they don’t, bc we don’t market ourselves as the rock stars we are.
No state testing!!!!!
I can only think of positive things. I guess getting students who don't want to be in the CTE class and make things less enjoyable for those that want to be there.

I agree, there’s so many wonderful things. At least we can inspire interest, but it’s tough without the student passion from time to time.
