Every now and then I visit the r/exmuslim subreddit to understand why [some] people are disenchanted with our beautiful religion. I’m saddened to read the vast majority of grievances (not all) are related to how the religion was introduced to them by their parents / society. How sometimes cultural norms foreshadow religion, how parents exert their own [religious and cultural] insecurities onto their kids, forcing them to ‘practice’ vs explaining it to them, and most important by living it and leading by example.
We as individuals (and as parents) need to improve our understanding of the religion first and then introduce it in a manner that is encouraging vs forcing it upon the kids while exclaiming ‘do as I say’… those kids will rebel (for the most part) as soon as they’re out of the house…

most people who describe themselves as ex-muslims have dealt with religious or cultural issues within their communities. Either by not being accepted or being ostracized for their actions. Most of the time in my opinion it seems more cultural than anything.
There are people who aren’t practicing or don’t identity as muslims anymore. The live their life and don’t make it a point to call them selves ex muslims or be mad at anyone relgious.
This is based on my experience with Atheist or agnostic peoples from a muslim family and those are the two buckets i categorize them in.
