I’m gonna go with tone deaf. The writers probably came up with what they thought was a clever play on words and didn’t think any farther than that. I’m hesitant to give them too much credit.

It’s insinuated that blue eyes are good genes because that’s where the ad lands. Is there such a thing as bad genes? What makes blue eyes “good” exactly. Can “good” exist without “bad?”

Y’all, the problem is that the ad is a subtle reminder of the racist history of the United States. Good “genes” were considered blonde hair and blue eyes, both of which Sydney Sweeney has. An ad featuring a blonde-haired, blue-eyed woman talking about her “good jeans” is going to sound like the days when praising white skin and demonizing dark/brown skin was normal and accepted (you know, pre-Civil Rights era, pre-World War II Germany, etc.). And to make this ultra clear, I’m saying this because “genes” and “jeans” are homophones. Knowing that politically, we’re in a climate where major figures and a large base of supporters of those figures are actively trying to move us back to those times makes this ad less than tasteful and it’s the reason for the backlash.

I’d place my bets on this being a top-down decision to play into the current admin’s strategy + talking points to get into their good books. Over the next few months, I’m definitely watching what type of reward or profit AE gains.

I think they could have pulled off the genes/jeans thing if the campaign included some non-white stars with "great jeans" and not just Sydney. In aggregate, it would have been clear that they weren't holding up light skin and blue eyes as being "great."
As it stands, they're either referring to her other endowments, or they're going with white supremacy.
It would have worked equally well to strategize around different types of styles/people since AE sells a variety of style jeans and everyone is wearing different styles of jeans now than ever before.
It’s the polar opposite of the Bud Light fiasco. Should be a lesson… when the pendulum swings too far in one direction, (and is alienating, or “tone deaf”, to half of the population), don’t be surprised when it swings really far in the other direction.

It’s in house but this has zero to do with AE. This is woke women of the left continuing to haunt Sydney’s every waking moment. They went after he for these Squatch bath water soap campaign. The attack most every movie she’s in. Now it’s AE. If it was KeKe Palmer in that campaign they wouldn’t say a word but because it’s Sweeney whose family is very MAGA ( she disavows their MAGA comments &posts) even though Sydney claims to be a Dem and says she voted Harris. These women on the left deny her claims saying she’s just trying to avoid bad PR. So they continue to chase after her trying to tear her down every chance they get. If this was anyone else people would just shrug their shoulders and move on.
