I loved Woodley Park. Very walkable and family friendly, I used to live right by the zoo. It’s also one metro stop away from DuPont circle. I just wish I could afford to buy a house there 😅
Can second Woodley Park. Quieter, lovely. Kalorama too if you can afford it.
I strongly recommend Arlington if you are looking for family-friendly. Look up Clarendon/Court House/Rosslyn. Very close to DC and still very family friendly. You should also look up Georgetown which is a beautiful neighborhood in DC.
I second this! Arlington is a great alternative to being close to the city without the limitations of the being in the city
Depends on your budget.

Dupont circle or Georgetown are your most family friendly best bets, bet depends on your budget.
4-5k might not get you something in Georgetown proper. Try for Glover Park and north around the zoo. Or play it safe and do Arlington or Bethesda.
I love Logan Circle and Van Ness!

You might really like the Delray area of Alexandria for being family friendly and walkable. Feels more suburban than city, and probably a 30-40 min commute from DuPont especially if you can drive off peak. As a point of reference, off peak (like 10 am) took me maybe 22 min the other day from the King street exit of 395 to a block from the White House. Suggestion: get on Google maps at your expected commute time and punch in various routes between addresses of interest to see real time traffic.
