What are the best areas of law for work life balance if you are currently raising a family with young children? If any?

Most in house counsel roles that aren’t M&A or transactional focused.

I have 3 young children and have incredible WLB. Literally went to church at noon yesterday and work out for 45 minutes during the day a few times a week. Plan on logging off at 4 today which is not unusual.

I do patent prosecution with 4 kids aged 9–1. We make it work! Fully remote, fairly predictable hours, fairly independent line of work.

My previous gov job has this wlb even though the boss was definitely the worst human being I have ever met

Family law has good WLB in terms of hours, etc but there is definitely a trade off due to the nature of the work

Not M&A - an M&A attorney

Cisco

Pros:

- fairly decent place to work (from someone who worked with the Vancouver and San Jose offices). never met a blue badger (permanent employee) who had awful things to say.

- Ashley Goodall (their SVP, Methods & Intelligence) co-authored a brilliant book on leadership and people management called “Nine Lies About Work” that makes me believe they can be an awesome place to work

Cons:

- red badgers had low morale since they’re contract workers and can be terminated at any time

Any tips for building a client base from scratch? I’m a 4th year associate at a firm of 12 attorneys. I practice in business, compliance, and real estate (primarily on partners’ files) and don’t litigate. Most of the partners’ clients are wealthy friends or friends of friends (not my circle). Associates are not referred business, even cold calls, and so far “networking” events like Chamber of Commerce luncheons have been a bust. I equate a book to autonomy and career choice and pressure is on.
