What are the biggest problems facing veterans?

Related to the job search, the biggest issue for me personally is not having roots in the community where I’m living. When you’re constantly moving, it’s hard to network and get established in the local area (especially in any industry where it’s important to have a strong reputation and connections). We’ve all heard the phrase, “it’s not What you know but Who you know.” Well all of my peers are in the military and they aren’t hiring. Ha!

Lack of job opportunities: Due to a lack of prior civilian work experience and/or specific abilities, many veterans have trouble obtaining jobs after leaving the military.

Access to healthcare: Many veterans have difficulty accessing the healthcare they need, due to a lack of insurance and/or long wait times for VA services.

I’m a 9th year in a mostly litigation-based practice group at a one-tier partnership firm. My group’s billable hours have been low the last few years, so making partner will be nearly impossible, and a counsel position is not viable long-term in my group. What’s the best option here if partnership is the ultimate goal? Try to get a NEP/counsel position at another firm, which is likely difficult in my market, or offer to take a class cut by a few years?
