Pro’s - it’s easy and super sustainable
Cons - you won’t learn a ton of stuff
Pros: easy and lots of programme exposure
Cons: depending on the portfolio and governance stringency, it can get very boring very quickly.
Tip: definitely add it to your arsenal, you’ll need aspects of it everywhere, but try and dual hat with a PM role if you can
What’s the diff between PMO and PM?
If newer to the firm, industry, or consulting in general it can give you a good high level view of what all the different workstreams are doing. Also gives you good exposure to workstream leads if you want to try and change roles down the line. But you know, also super boring and tedious without being challenging.
Seeing the comments on this thread I wonder if it’s because everyone’s engagements are so short that they don’t really have a ton of experience in a PMO. Depending on the size you can be doing a ton of different things: change management, budgeting, BPR, defining programs/ projects that adhere to the strategic goals of a company or institution. I recently ran into a guy that was a VP of Program Management overseeing the PMO and his portfolio was about $500M in programs. Don’t see how that would be boring to anyone.
I wish.. all i do is get people lunch and the occasional PlsFix 😅
