I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Yes. 2+ shows you can stick it out. Everyone knows consulting isn’t easy, and ppl who leave after a year show they can’t cut it
If it’s another consulting firm then yeah you have absolutely no chance if you leave after 1 year. If it’s to something that isn’t consulting then it shouldn’t matter much assuming you have hard skills or other things that make up for your lack of professional experience
In the long run, we are all dead. 1 yr? 2 yrs? Meh
That’s not true at all - in the process of moving to a better firm after 1.5 yrs here. “No chance” is absolutely BS
Fair, “no chance” is extreme. But I would definitely expect there to be a lot of apprehension as to why you left so early, so you better have a very good reason
I think 1 year jumping ship to another firm is totally normal. Proves you can do it, but just not your speed bc of culture, whatever. To industry, it’s harder. They look to ex consultants to take on managerial roles and lead projects and a year isn’t enough to signal your ability to do that yet.
Depends on where you’re trying to go next
Looking for better opportunities and better culture. Bringing with my 1.5 yrs of experience but coming in entry level at a T2. Think it’s a fair business case
Depends on your skill set, reasons of leaving, role and type of company you want to move. Do you have specialized skills? Do you want to go to a smaller company with different core values / culture? If you know your motive, what you want, etc. and can align your next steps to these, it should not matter much. On the other hand, if you are planning to leave as a concealed method of escaping that might be a problem.
This 1 year can’t cut it talk is stoooopid. I did one year got promoted and got the hell out. Consulting sucked. Wouldn’t give another yr to it
What if it’s to another consulting firm lol
I’m probably going to take a pass at your resume if you’re trying to leave your current gig after a year. I certainly am if you make a habit of it.
Out of UG? I’d say yes. After one year most people still don’t know anything, after two you probably actually have some good experience under your belt. After three you’ll be a strong candidate to make a jump to a managerial position in industry
Lol left after year 1 for 2x pay. Doesn't matter when you leave as long as you have a reason.
1 = can’t cut it. That being said, if you can get the interview and the offer, it doesn’t matter.
365 days?
It all depends on your skills. I continue to get pinged by recruiters on LinkedIn the day I update to a new job, and get Big4 interest 4 months in to a new gig which came after leaving another Big4 after less than 1.5 years, btw I don't have a bachelor's. Recruiting is there to get billable bodies and if they have a need for you they will get you, if you are generic they will uphold all kinds of unwritten and written rules. It's why PwC pays a "hot skills" premium over and above the cohort system.
