Nah you bill whatever as you go. No need for block billing. Nobody has time for that. Moreover, goodluck explaining this if a client ever decides to assess your fees.
If you email a client on “x” date, you bill for that on “x” date. This way, if it’s brought up, it’s an easy correlation to the work completed and the work billed for.
If you’re fresh to biglaw I’d recommend asking the billing lawyer whether they have any specific docketing practices for their narratives. Usually there’s a firm-wide docketing standard that you will have been trained on during on-boarding but even then some lawyers are very particular about how they draft their narratives (EG - never bill more than 8 hours to one narrative; never mention the opposing lawyer’s firm because they consider it “free marketing” to the other side). I learned that the hours are important but the narratives, down to the verbiage used, are just as important to a lot of billing lawyers and it saves them and their assistant a ton of time at the end of the month redrafting your narratives in the pro forma before it goes to the invoice.
