I think it’s called dangling partnership in front of you.

Never can be

Just speaking for my (big law) firm we would usually at least match whatever signing bonus being offered if we want to retain the associate. Usually by year 8 we know who is likely to be a good partner candidate and I assume the same is true at your firm. You could extract some value in terms of folks paying attention to your career progression/business case.

like

Does your firm view it negatively going forward that the associate negotiated for a retention bonus?

like

I’ve heard of $50k, $100k and $200k (the latter was in 2022).

like

It’s really about getting a signing bonus and having the firm match it. Comparisons from 2021 & 2022 aren’t relevant.

like

How do you go about getting a retention bonus? Do you go to your partners and tell them you are considering leaving or that you have an offer from another firm and give them a chance to keep you?

like

You’d have to tell them you have an offer and the amount of the signing bonus elsewhere, and then give them a couple days.

Just got offered a job at a small biotech in London (UK). ~£45k plus bonus but only 1YR FTC and no equity.

Pretty sure it's a discovery role too.

I just finished my PhD at a very good uni with 3 years technician experience before that. BSc and MSc also at very good unis with good grades.

I think this offer is well below par, but curious to hear what you guys think/if you have any comparisons?

Thanks in advance :)

First year here in a quiet patch (following a very busy period). There have been a few days where I bill 0 hours, which I’m told isn’t worth worrying about in this quiet time. But how do you spend your time on days when you bill nothing? This is a major stress for me. Cheers!

I’ve asked for work but no luck. I know they say this is normal for a stub but when should I start getting worried and consider looking for exit options? Fyi, I like my practice group, so I don’t want to change to a different group within my firm, hence would have to lateral, if I have to. Also, other co-1st years are churning in high hours.

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

Why do many associates at top tier firms stay to make Partner when they can go in-house in tech and make around the same, even long term? For example, you can make near 400-550k in-house at Google, Netflix, FB with 8-10 years of exp. More senior than that in-house, it can easily break $1M.
