Unless you’re an Eng, I think the upside on consulting is much higher. You can move fairly quickly, but the burn rate is also way higher than tech. Maybe you could get somewhere close with PM as well but a much more competitive route
If you get into the right position at a FANG you could be making as much or even more than you would at top tier consulting after your MBA.
PM in Tech, not just FAANG, makes a bunch. I’m a post-MBA PM at a non-FAANG with 220k TC (doesn’t include the $35k signing and 17k moving bonus). And I’m constantly being reached out for other PM roles across tech (including FAANG and well-known start-ups) even though I’m just a few months in.
Consulting is a clearer path up, that’s true. But Tech has the higher upside if you’re a strong performer.
That being said, the career path is pretty different. Less travel/hours in tech (unless your work at the Amazon slave shop). Quicker access to high level strategy in consulting. Consulting Partners focus more on sales, Tech Product Directors focus more on strategy.
