I’ve always liked it because it’s black af. And it’s black and gay af.
But being from a Great Lakes state…the weather…outside of pollen apocalypse…is nice
It used to be the cost of living for me but now I can’t even say that. 😅
Couldn’t agree more
🌲🌴🌳
This is my #1, nature. I moved from San Diego where green is a rare color.
Pros:
- cost of living is relatively low compared to other large or larger cities like NYC, Chicago, San Francisco, & Seattle
- can fly direct almost anywhere in the country and likely international
- has tremendous access to sports; top flight MLS, NFL, NBA, and MLB teams plus college sports (SEC championship football is here, college football kickoff game, peach bowl, and GA Tech in town with UGA, Auburn, Bama, Clemson, Tennessee, & South Carolina all relatively close
- diversity in all forms and lots of great food comes from our immigrant community
- great career opportunities not tied to one industry or company across the metro
- no real cold weather
- people are friendly
Cons
- cost of living has increased ALOT over the last ten years especially inside the perimeter
- it’s humid and hot in the summer and allergy season is real
- traffic is to be expected in a big city and Atlanta has it although it’s the same as any other
- lack of daily use public transport unless you live and work right off a MARTA line
- constant political fighting between the City of Atlanta and the State of Georgia, everything is a wedge issue between rural and urban voters
- doesn’t have the same cultural significance as other cities, ie Broadway plays in NYC, the real film industry in LA, Miami nightlife, or history of Boston/Philly
- can be dangerous in some areas or pockets
- gentrification of intown neighborhoods
Meant to add to the pros list:
- close proximity to the beach (Atlantic or Gulf)
- close proximity to the mountains
- several lakes close by
Lots of diversity in people, places, and businesses.
Most companies have offices here, so the opportunities are great.
Lots of stuff to do, whether your thing is sports, food, outdoors, etc.
Easy destination hub to get in/out of and go virtually anywhere with minimal layovers
Buying a house is a great investment here compared to other big cities (cheaper, more space, yet still high appreciation)
