As you grow up the ladder the money goes beyond salary, you could gain more from bonus and equity.
True, good way of thinking about it.

Yes. And the cap is the size of the company. You can’t make a $1M a year when the company does $10M in revenue. I’ve kept moving to bigger ponds with bigger fish in them.
True that!

Most marketing careers plateau at $120K-180K (Director/Senior Director level) unless you hit VP or CMO. That's where the majority stop – not from lack of skill, but from limited seats at the table.
VP-level in-house: $200K-300K+ depending on company size. CMO at mid-large companies: $300K-500K+. Agency-side tops out lower unless you make partner. The real earnings jump comes from equity at startups or bonuses tied to revenue – base salary caps faster than total comp.
The catch: getting from $150K to $250K+ often requires company hopping, not internal promotions. And C-suite roles go to people with P&L ownership or revenue responsibility, not just marketing execution. Set your optimistic goal at VP-level comp, then decide if the politics required to get there are worth it.
Wow! Great detailed response. Thanks
