Amazon doesn’t owe them any proof lol. It’s a job, either take it or leave it
This is both right and wrong. Right in that Amazon pays their salary.
The problem is that Amazon’s one of those companies where you’re unable to make decisions without hard data to validate it. The operations and the brand were built on this. It’s been part of every keynote, policy announcement, and internal process for twenty years.
When a company like Amazon (and JP Morgan for that matter) abandons measurement because they don’t have the data to shape an outcome , it permanently discredits the team making it. How do you take the principle seriously if it’s not a hard principle?
Here’s what’s real: Amazon has serious bloat. Competitors are encroaching and Andy Jassy is responsible for his org since doesn’t have a COO. I’ve been impressed with his navigating COVID, but he made bad operational moves and should publicly take responsibility.
Both, to some degree. I think it’ll be enforced aggressively for the next few months, and then once people start leaving it’ll be easier for good employees to find exemptions (which was largely the case last year) or go back to being managerial discretion (largely the case pre-covid).
My sense of it is that top management at Amazon sees people as fungible parts. They don't really care if people leave, and in many cases they would rather have the discontented people exit. People can make arguments and try to sound reasonable, but there's no reason involved. If you leave and they want to fill the position they can find another fungible character to take your place.
