HONESTLY……
We have tests like every other month. We’ll do a test for 2-3 days, analyze and present in 2-3 days, and then not too much during the downtime. My job is VERY low-key.
I guide strategic research in design for an enterprise org. I conduct my own research, mentor more junior uxr, provide training, and consult on projects being conducted by others. I spend a lot of time in meetings related to business side of things these days,! In addition to design and research specific topics. I love it, the day to day is novel and I need that.
Disappointing that’s how. Very low maturity level.
We have no tools. The policy is we build tools for ourselves but in reality that’s just a bunch of crappy half-baked MVP ‘tools’ that are worst than no tools.
Access to customers is very limited, recruitment is hard because we don’t really have a good database to recruit from.
Work is mostly tactical.
A lot of the decision makers lack external experience so they don’t know what good toolstack, good process, good ROI really looks like.
Your happiness highly depends on what team you’re in - if they value your work, you’ll be ok. If they don’t, it will be a struggle.
But you know… my views are my own and don’t represent the company I work for 🙄 (or whatever is the statement we are meant to use when posting on the internet)
Hmm my company is not really mature like big tech companies.
However I do both strategic and tactical research, for strategic research is more about product / service / feature discovery which influences product strategy and what may go on the product roadmap. This allows for more creativity in the methods, and you get to do more workshops and participatory design studies.
Tactical research for when enhancing research features, and doing followup research.
Mostly work with quant / qualitative methods, other people across the org and departments as well as with PMs and designers.
We of course do scrappy research but that's usually if something is urgent and designer or PM might need to know something quickly.
We then do adhoc tasks like do weekly newsletter for PMs about user feedback, and do bi-monthly newsletter for product and research updates for sharing to org.
