What GS pay grade should I be looking for if I'm looking to exit as an SC from Deloitte?
It's the 3rd level up, with typically 4-6 years consulting experience. I have less but I've moved up fast.

Depends on the Agency. At my former one (IC), I never met anyone who came in higher than an 11. Even mid-career Ph.D.s with management experience were 11s, but then moved up quickly.

like

I knew some people that came in at 13, but they were prior contractors.

IC will not bring you in at 14. Probably more like 11

Also, don't limit yourself to GS positions in government. A lot of the non appropriated agencies (think FDIC, OCC, SEC, TVA...) have paybands with technical/nonsupervisory paths.

like

It depends. I finished my working career as a GS13 and just retired. When you apply for a job you must clear the first gate by answering all of the applicant questions correctly. If you make it past that then an interview. I have seen consultants come in at the 13, 14 and15 level. You can google the pay bands and see what you are comfortable with. Some agencies will bring you in at the first pay grade and some will move the pay up to a higher band. Based on what you have described I would say GS13.

I came in as a 13 and don’t know anyone who got hired directly as a 14 from the private sector. 14’s are usually supervisors, team leads, or technical experts who have a deep understanding of the policies and processes internal to that organization, or is coming from organization similar to it. Many of those jobs aren’t even advertised to the public. It’s possible, but not very likely. The 14 to 13 job ratio in the DC area is like 1:5. Most people come in at a 13, and work their way up. Also, now that I went through the federal hiring process, I’m very wary when people say that got “offered” a fed job. Was it an actual tentative offer from USAJOBS? Or was it an informal verbal offer from a client who usually has very little knowledge (and influence) in how HR screens for qualified candidates? Just saying.

like

Yeah definitely not the norm and your correct there was the position already establish, he wasn’t just creating it for me.

like

I was offered a GS14 position with the same consulting title/experience as you, but it will also depend on skills. Personally I wouldn’t look at anything below 14 though

It really depends on the role and the required KSAs and experience. I’ve found that a lot of Fed jobs are very boxed-in and the billet is what it is to start with, esp. if you’re coming from a non-Fed starting point. The posting should tell you exactly what grade they think the job is, and what the potential for promotion could be. Fed jobs, unless you’re a Schedule C appointee, are not always easily negotiated like jobs in the private sector.

helpful

Ya GS14 or bust unless you are desperate to get out, then I could see settling for GS13. Under no circumstances should you enter lower than that.

Does this change for very prestigious agencies that have a long onboarding process?
I'm not sure if the one I applied to hires above the 13 level but idk

I’ve known dozens of people hired at the IC I’m engaged hired as 14s and 15s.
