What is a reasonable period for accepting or declining an offer? Put another way, what is the typical amount of time that you think an offer should be held open?

In my experience, a week is typical. A week is not “fair.” But that is the power discrepancy in hiring, especially in-house.

Employers will take weeks or even months to make an offer, often delaying so they can interview “just a few more” candidates. Some of this can be them waiting on more preferred candidates to say “no.” Somehow, playing candidates against each other is acceptable, but (as argued above) comparing offers from a couple different employers is “gaming” and “not really considering” the offer.

2-3 days reasonably for a lateral and 1 week max for something complicated with a cross- country move and some financial aspects that a tax advisor would have to evaluate. Anything else is just playing offers against each other and gaming and not really considering the offer and at that point the employer would be better served by going to their next candidate.

1-2 days

Wow okay this is a way shorter fuse than I thought

My in house offer I only got 2-3 days (which was after I asked for more time). When I lateraled between firms years ago I got 2 weeks. Maybe things have changed though.

Having just went through this. 2 days, 5 days max. You may have been the best candidate, but likely not the only candidate. The job market is better, but still not great by any means. Just some things to think about.

Additional Posts in In-House Counsel

I am interviewing for an in-house role that I am really excited about, but they require 5 days in office. I have young kids, and these last few years of remote work and flexibility have really been crucial in helping manage it all. Has anyone else made this transition back to full time in office and do you regret it?

I'm a brand new attorney (passed the Feb 2021 bar) who started an in-house counsel position a few months ago (where my focus is negotiating agreements for the sale of my company's software). I was a contracts manager on an in-house team for 4 years prior, which is why I was able to go straight in-house. I'm entirely skipping out on firm life, which feels both good and bad. Is there anything I should think about getting experience in? How should I go about making sure I am seeing enough things?
