What is a small red flag you observe when interviewing at firms? Mine is when they don’t buy coffee for employees.

One litigation partner, when he heard I was interviewing elsewhere, said, “Do you want to win?” And suggested I should join them if I want to win. That and the newspaper articles about another partner using the firm to sue the local high school, because his kid didn’t get “enough” playing time in sports made me think it wasn’t my kind of firm.

For me, one was a firm whose partners came across as uncouth shysters. Another firm had an unsettling vibe: all the associates and support staff acted like they were walking on eggshells. I almost felt they were watching me head for the interview room thinking, “Don’t do it!”

Wait there are law firms that don't have coffee for the employees??

Went to one as law student where they bragged about all of their work with Enron. It wasn't even the white collar defense/investigations group.

Theres also some firms I personally wouldn't work at because their partners consistently put out low quality work.

Idk if this is normal but they told me there is only one binder for the discovery materials, and we weren't allowed to print any additional copies of anything. We all had to use that same binder and coordinate who would take it home each night if need be...with of course the priority always going to the partner.

“We’re like a family.” I took the job. Toxicity levels off the charts. Never ever again.

The people at this firm were so far off the psychodynamic deep end, I don’t think there’s enough snow in the world for Freud to have touched it.

I have been offered a position at a non-US B4 with a 2 year path to partner. I know one of the partners at the local firm and have the support of the regional service line lead, and am bringing a specialized skill set they are trying to open a new business around. The KPIs seem achievable and I’ll be in charm school to help build support within that timeline. Most of me thinks a 2 year path under these circumstances realistic but my inner skeptic is jaded. Anything I might have missed?

Additional Posts in Law

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.
