What is it like being a partner? Is it less stressful in a way because you know more and know how to handle things? Do you still stress about billing everyday?

Made partner earlier this year. I find it to be more stressful, but that’s partially because I’m putting a lot of pressure on myself to get a sprinting start on the BD side. Had the slowest billable summer of my career even though I was still in the office/working 10+ hour days mostly on admin and BD crap (I’m also on two committees…), and that stressed me out. Now it seems like the BD push is actually working, but I have so much work hitting all at once that I don’t feel like I can deliver for anyone well.

So yeah, nah, it’s not less stressful. Do I know more about how to run a deal and do good work? Sure, but it’s still easy to let the self-doubt creep in. I’m not sure I’ll ever fully feel like I know what I’m doing, even though I know I’m good at the work. Every time I feel like I’ve mastered the job, it turns out I need to learn a new skill to advance (delegation, mentorship, management, staying organized on admin stuff, client management, then bringing in your own work, etc.) and it gets challenging all over again.

P1 - it gets better. I definitely spent most of my first year as a partner feeling like I was relearning how to be a lawyer, because the client expectations changed so much with the title shift. You’ll find your new rhythm quickly. Also, start pushing things down, so you have more time for BD.

It’s still stressful, just in new and different ways. Originations and collections instead of hours, for example.

Exactly. More client management and BD, less drafting and deadlines (transactional).

I have a partner that calls me multiple times a day to talk about updates on our cases. Sometimes just to ask “anything to update me on?” He’s known across all of the associates for doing this. Most of the calls repeat information I’ve already provided in emails to him or the client. I normally bill this time as “strategize on” or “consider XYZ in further of” and it keeps getting appealed. Any advice?

Transactional associate. Lateraled 6 months ago and one of the biggest pain points has been my new firm’s inclination to “hop on a call”, which of course requires every single stakeholder to join. The end result being every call has 25 people on it and nothing actually gets done because no one wants to ask a question that could come off as silly. It’s destroying my ability to get anything done during the day. It’s a complete performance and it drives me nuts.
