Sometimes you take less money for less work.
Peace of mind sometimes rules over money.
My lateral moves took me from $125k - $145k - $170k - (then in house) $250k - $300k. But I’m a job hopper and moved on average every 2 years except for one quick move in 7 months before going in house.
I think that most law firms have a compensation scale based on your class year and experience. In big law firms that pay Cravath rates there is little or no room for additional pay unless the market is very buoyant and you are fortunate enough to have a skill set that is in demand. If that is the case there may be an opportunity for a one-off sign-on bonus but not a lot else.
Lateralling is an opportunity to seek a different work culture and/or work in a role to extend your skills, but an automatic rise in comp is not a given.
As noted above, you may also opt for less in exchange for a better work/life balance or to work with different colleagues. Check out what is expected of you by talking to other associates so that you lateral with your eyes open and with at least some good knowledge of what is likely to be expected of you in your new role.
And this is why most attorneys don’t like recruiters. Absolutely no knowledge of the profession beyond the absolute basics.
I’m sure this is not average, but my lateral move took me from 185k to 310k. Worth it!
My lateral move took me from 140k to 215k
Same field. Litigation. I was 3 years out at 140k and then 6 years out for 215k
My laterals went $60k - $100k - $170k - $210k - $233.5k. (Context: The first jump switched states and practice areas. The jump from $100k to $170k looks larger than it is, since I’d gotten raises up to $150k by the time I left.)
