I’ve put myself up for L4 promo this cycle. Assuming I get it, what would be the best next steps to optimize for long-term growth/TC?
My understanding is that L5->L6 is extremely painful at Google. It may be easier to leave for a handful of years and gain managerial experience before returning.
L4->L5 is less challenging; however, I’m under the impression I can do this quicker at another company (if I leave after being freshly promo’d) AND get higher TC.

Exec Director is a more senior position. Most Client facing Exec Director were recently renamed Partners from 1st July but are not Equity Partners
Thanks. As per data in the EY Value Realized report on EY website, there is only an ‘Exec Director’ role directly above a ‘Senior Manager’ role in ‘client-facing’ roles (no Director role). Hence, it seemed that a Director in client facing role is actually called or counted as an ‘Exec Director’
No - your assumption is wrong. Client facing Director roles are counted for headcount purposes as Senior Managers (I work in Talent; we deal with this a lot)
EY1 - so is client serving Director more = SM? Also is a client serving Director counted/included in PPEDD rank?
The 'D' for Director in PPEDD represents CBS Director rank.
Thanks. That’s useful. So, when it comes to bonus payment, does a SM4 (rebranded as Director) fall in the Director bucket or the Senior Manager bucket? See pic below
Into Director - if that post is talking about SM4 in the UK.
Some other regions also have SM4 = Director but not many
