Trusting yourself and your ideas regardless of the outcome makes the work easier and better.
Trusting that whatever happens with your career, you’ll be okay either way, helps keep you level headed, out of stupid political bs, keeps you out of gossip etc.
Overall, insecurity really makes things more difficult in all aspects of a career. Through experience and effort I’ve learned to trust myself and that’s made everything better.
Also realizing that advertising is just a job and doesn’t define you and shouldn’t be your sole source of worth or happiness, has helped lower the pressure from everything. Especially during this quarantine, I’ve learned that people and relationships are what matters at the end of the day.
Confidence, empathy, and agree with SC1. It’s just a job. When you stop letting it define your self worth you pretty much have a leg up on anyone who does.
Empathy is big though. Relating to your bosses on a personal level is very important.
Listening. Nobody listens.
So true. We leave meetings and people hear their own stories. It’s usually what they want to hear. I try to listen as closely and unbiased as possibly. Makes my job easier too.
I don’t care as much about what other people think of me, compared to most people, and I’m not afraid of confrontation because I believe in myself.
This has led to a couple of key advantages: decisiveness, honesty, and an ability to say no to clients and tell them they’re wrong when we believe it. They almost always end up loving us more because we tell it to them straight.
But at the end of the day a lot of people worry more about consensus and being liked by everyone than they do about the quality of the work. But you have way more control over your work than you do over other people.
So why not worry about what you can control?
100% agree with this! Being confident in front of clients and unafraid of them is so important. It helps me be able to talk them through the work with more ease and listen to to their problems. Ultimately that helps me problem solve in the room sometimes or talk them out of their own shitty ideas.
Besides that I’d say ambition has made me successful (noticed at my job and elevated). I bring pro-active work and do extra things to make the agency I work at better for others.
Coach
EQ. The desire to roll up my sleeves and get shit done. I can defend work diplomatically.
I am authentic. People on my team commented on this for my review. The downside is, I don’t do well or respect inauthentic people, even if they’re my superiors, and I can sniff them out quite quickly.
