What other roles besides delivery manager and product manager would share similar skill sets? I’m looking for a new job but there are few red flags which says I might not be the right fit for the PM role so want to explore options.
I enjoy creating solutions for customer problems and have a tech and UX as well as delivery background before landing to the current PM role, and I think there are things I am quite good at the role. (Cont in comments)

Product management is often about giving the rest of the team all of the credit for successes and taking all of the heat for failures. But there is no failure that doesn't teach you something about your product, your users, your business. The trick is learning not to see the failures as personal failures. It's not a PM's job to build products using their own personal opinions, so you have to remember it's not about you. And even if it is (it happens), teach others what you learned. Spread the knowledge, then iterate. Delivering something is just step one of the journey, so don't let it get you down.

I don't say any of this to discount you feeling it's not right for you, just want you to know it's not just you.

Followed this thread. OP, you are not alone in feeling this way. I sometimes question whether PM is what I should be doing. Especially looking at the big picture, strategy etc. And given the comments by the OC, I feel having a good mentor/manager is so important. I haven't had one and i am so frustrated/dejected at work right now. So low on confidence that I am even self sabotaging the interviews.

I agree, product management is a great asset to have, i don’t think it’s a long term career. It does make you a SME in a lot of other groups cause you have to know how other departments work. Long term for me, i would prefer to be in supplier sourcing or SCM.

Product Operations? It's a somewhat newer role, so probably varies quite a bit, but would align with product thinking.

Thank you for your insights, I’m based in Australia and it seems the Product Operations roles available here are usually quite senior - either a coach or product strategy lead.
How is this role different to the usual Product Manager role? It’s the first time I heard about this role.

I am unsure the culture where if there is anything that went wrong with the product, it’s the PM’s fault to blame but when success is here, it’s everyone’s effort. I really do appreciate sharing the success with the wider team and I think that’s necessary, but I have long struggled with self esteem and only improved recently so to be the only person to blame when anything goes wrong makes me question if this will stress me out making the right decisions.

The other thing is I’ve just passed my mid thirties and I have been diagnosed with Lupus few years ago. I feel physically I am just a lot weaker than when I was in my 20s and been getting sick a lot easier, so I question if I can work as hard as I had in the past and worried my body cannot handle the amount of work as a PM seems a very demanding role as a norm.

Hi - thanks for sharing. I’ve been feeling similar thoughts about product management lately. Simply not a good long term fit. I’m planning to shift into product marketing. Similar skill set but different goals.

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, I don’t have marketing experience besides working with our Marketing Director in executing and launching some marketing campaigns, so I don’t think it is an area I can shift into without prior experience?

Since you said you like creating solutions for customers, maybe a solutions architect? The overlap of technical/interpersonal skills is similar

Thanks for your replies, I am trying to move away from a tech heavy role/trajectory like PM2 suggested

I’m graduating in December, with a background in environmental economics and policy. Consulting didn’t work out this cycle. Made it to final rounds for Bain and Kearney but in the end didn’t get an offer. I want to recoup and try again, but I’m worried that once I’m out of undergrad the door will be closed to starting in consulting.

What can I do to make this happen? I have friends and connections at Bain and Kearney and the other firms as well, but not sure if it’s feasible now.

I see so many posts about going in-house and wonder if it’s a possibility for me at some point or if my chosen career path has pretty much closed the door on that, since I mostly see people discussing this in the big law bowl. Or does anyone have tips about how to build useful skills for in-house in my current role?

Lit boutique v. full-service statewide regional firm as mid-level commercial lit lateral out of biglaw. Things to consider? Pay and non-equity partnership prospects are similar with similar timeline. Regional firm has a much stronger presence in my city, while boutique would involve a more national practice and possibly more sophisticated work. Fwiw I know some people at the regional firm and the people seem awesome. The boutique is full of well-accomplished and super smart lawyers. Need advice!
