Does it make sense to work for a congressman after clerking for a federal judge? I have no idea what I want to do career wise, I've already done the firm thing and I don't want to do that, or at least not yet. Pretty sure I'm going to be staying with the congressman's staff for like a 1-1.5 years.

Do it. Why not? More contacts in more places are always good and key down the road.

like

I'm just worried about "wasting" years of experience. But yeah, I didn't even think about the contacts I'll make thanks!

Sounds like a great opportunity. Just watch out for those August Reinstatement Riots!

Oh yeah youre right! Lol

Anything makes sense if it helps you figure out where it is youre happy and what you want to do. What doesn’t make sense is taking a traditional firm route if you know that isn’t what you want to do

like

If you’re unsure about what you want to do with your career it isn’t a waste. It may be a waste if you had said “I know I want to be equity partner at a big firm” but right now you’re not clear on what your future holds and that means trying new things and getting a taste for different career paths. That’s the only way you’ll be able to determine what you like and what you don’t like! You can’t figure out if you like pineapples on pizza unless you try it :)

As long as you’re ok making no money the hill is great!

like

Oh thanks for this insight! Yeah, I'm not really looking to get rich, I just need a salary

If you don’t know what you want future-wise now, it sounds like a worthwhile experience. Should be an interesting journey

I think I'm just worried of "wasting" those years of experience if they won't matter to wherever I eventually transfer to.

A position like that can be a good jumping off point for policy-oriented legal roles in the future. It seems like a good move if you don’t have any other clear direction

I'm just too worried about "wasting" years of experience if I don't eventually go the policy career path? But yeah, I won't know unless I try?

Generally it would be great. Given this political climate, make sure the member of congress you work for won’t do anything to blackball you from future employment.

Oh yeah, another thing to consider. Thanks!

Love my current IC role and manager, get to work on strategic transactions and closer to the business. If my goal is head of corp legal one day, should I suck it up and go for it? Thnx!

Hi All, just sharing what on mind to vent it out from my system. Maybe with this I could gain some insights and inspiration.
I have been working as a data scientist since 2018 & have been the bread winner. I have neither been under a proper mentor nor with a team of peers from my field to help me out.
