What puts Morgan Lewis, Clifford Chance, Cahill and O’Melveny at the top of the Vault rankings for compensation? Wachtell is obvious/well publicized, but I’m otherwise pretty confused what’s going on here…are these firms really that much better with comp than a v10 (or whatever) that pays median performers like 20% above market bonuses and top performers much more above that?

Morgan Lewis is in smaller cities but still pays market in those cities. Those associates are very satisfied with their Cravath scale comp. It’s a small number but that moves the needle.

It’s a self-reported score, not something that’s done independently by Vault.

I think Cahill pays strong bonuses, but otherwise this seems arbitrary. But there's nothing about Vault that isn't almost entirely arbitrary

like

Vault rankings are extremely unempirical, and should be taken with a grain of salt. The scores are generated based on completely subjective surveys.

Cahill has been known to pay summer bonuses, which can put their comp an edge above peer firms. Otherwise, I have never heard of OMM or ML paying significantly above the Cravath/Milbank scale.

Grain of salt, A2?

Vault rankings are silly.

“Keep costs down”???? I am happy to keep costs down by not working on this ducking matter anymore. Maybe stop saying yes to matters that are too small to justify our rates and staffing an expensive senior person on them when you’re already dying trying to get anything staffed. You didn’t have to do shit on this matter, didn’t hear you complaining about my taking the lead and managing everything for you when that was happening. >.>

How can I sell my 2 years of clerkship as valuable experience for corporate work? I would like to get credit for at least one year (at least in salary, if I can’t in seniority). I know for litigation they are more clearly valued and linked to that type of work, but I have reconsidered my interests and now am thinking of going into corp. However, I don’t want to feel like I wasted 2 years clerking (which I don’t feel like that, but I have to convince an employer of that too). Any help or insight?

Beginning to consider going in house (4th, corp) - I really haven’t thought about what I want, partly because I’m not sure what’s out there/attainable. Is it a bad idea to start by applying to a couple positions that interest me and seeing where that gets me? I’ll of course prep for the interviews but am afraid to burn potential bridges if I ultimately decline because I’m still figuring things out.

Working on some law firm applications tonight and it sucks that I know that I am so capable and have a strong work ethic but firms can’t see beyond grades or the fact that I didn’t go to a t14 law school or prestigious undergrad. I’ve worked twice as hard and feel like I’ve barely even gotten half as much. It’s discouraging sometimes especially because I worked so hard with pretty much no guidance (first gen, poc, low-income) to get into college and do well and then get into a t30 law school

Completely and totally miserable at my firm and just need a space to vent because my friends are tired of hearing about it. I wish the worst part about it was the amount of work, rather than the completely toxic culture, lack of appreciation, arbitrary and back/breaking deadlines, lack of mentorship/feedback/training, and the fact that the associates act like they don’t even know each other. I cry every day and constantly am made to feel stupid for not understanding the highly technical (cont.)

Anyone have slow months where you burn through a lot of your allotted pro bono/professional development hours to keep hitting minimum daily hours? The past few weeks have been like this for me. Should I be concerned (I.e., will this reflect poorly on me, come review time? Will I have dug myself too much of a hole if I keep burning my non-billable hours?) I’ve been asking partners if I can assist in any projects so I can fill my plate, but I’ve only gotten small (4-6 hour) tasks handed my way.
