In the SoCal region, we pay our seniors $70-85 with commission opportunities.
For an agency - it’s based on their total monthly managed billings
Depending on the city.. between $50k - $75k.
This is for an area outside of California or a major metropolitan city
I would say $60K - $75K as a base plus bonus, commission whatever you want to call it. You need someone to be tactical AND strategic AND build a capability all the while working directly with clients and being the point person for PPC.
That is a lot to ask of someone who is a Senior PPC manager. They will be hard to find but stars are out there or ones who are just managers now that are ready for their next step.
Just because you are small doesn’t mean you should/can pay lower than “market” value for good talent. Remember talent is an investment that will pay itself back more than multiple times over if you find, nurture and grow the right people.
You want your talent to be happy and feel like their are fairly compensated, wanted and appreciated. And that always means compensation regardless of what people say.
You might find some desperate people out there bc of the pandemic layoffs so you might find good talent but you want your people to feel like they are fairly compensated even in this pandemic job market. Remember by next year or even later this year, salaries and hiring will come back up and people will jump for higher compensation.
There is lots of great talent is the smaller cities but that doesn’t mean they will necessarily accept what they fee like is lower salaries. There are plenty of fully remote or mostly remote agencies and performance agencies hiring all over the country and paying good salaries.
If you truly cannot afford a certain salary range then I would think about reachable bonuses/commissions/share of profits. Make them reasonable.
And one thing I forgot, while people who learned SEM have also rather easily taken up Amazon, there are still people out there that only know how to do one. People who can do both are worth it, they platforms are so different and they require different workflows.

Anyone reporting to them?

The $50-75k mentioned above is reasonable, but really depends on the market. I'm in Boston and CoL is ridiculous for example. $85k wouldn't shock me for good talent.
Actually I was planning on paying more because we are small. We want greatness. We have some great clients already just need to add to our team. So if anyone wants to move to Denver hit me up. Promise a very competitive salary with bonus. :-)
I really do appreciate the insight from everyone.
That’s good to hear, you need stars to win a championship. That’s why the Nuggets are thinking about trading for Bradley Beal! Stars don’t come cheap!
What would be the salary expectation for someone managing a $250k/mo media budget?
Direct response? E-commerce? How many platforms/channels? What vertical?
You could essentially hire one person to actually run an auto insurance campaign that would theoretically spend $250k per month on paid search alone bc cpc’s are very high. Or it could be a beauty client or consumer products brand with multiple product lines with an ecomm store and that might require more than 1 person bc of the multiple campaigns needed structure wise and therefore workflow wise. A single person might be overwhelmed and barely have enough time to optimize and do strategy to optimize and grow the account vs just reporting, making changes and keeping the lights on/maintaining.
So it depends on the type of client and the amount of work needed. If this one person has day to day help from you or another person in your agency, then a senior manager or even a supervisor/someone who has been recently promoted would do at the salary range discussed earlier in this thread. If that person is basically going it alone then I would say $90K plus is warranted for an account of this monthly spend.
