What should I be making? I am a 3rd year equity partner. Been here my whole career. 300+ attorney insurance defense firm. Not in the firm’s main office, but am in a lcol city. 2,200 billable requirement, which I have always hit. Handle cases primarily involving auto accidents (red car blue car, to commercial), premises, and bad faith. I have a book of business of about 300k. Average rate appx. $215. I’m also involved in attorney recruiting and mentoring.

Do the math. 2200 hours at 215 is 475K. I’ll assume you’re doing about half of the work on your own book, so that adds 150K to 250K to your contribution. Overall contribution is somewhere between 625 and 725. Call overhead 200K. Generously, your net contribution is 425-525 before your comp. I’d suggest somewhere in the 200s

You made equity on a $300k book?!

like

Probably closer to 500k, that was a low, rough estimate. Either way, it’s not a requirement and many partners have no book with so many institutional clients.

I made like $350k as an income partner at an AM200… my “book” (or rather assigned clients) was close to yours. HCOL metro area

I started my career in my hometown, a city with about 135k people. After 4 years was at the point where I buy a house or move to a bigger city (600k people), I went with the ‘big’ city option. I lived there for about 18 months then the pandemic hit. Since then I still have my apartment in the new city but have been staying with my family in my hometown 95% of the time. I realized I have no reason other than work to be in the new city. Now I’m considering moving back to my hometown. Cont..

For anyone who practices tax lit in the US Tax Court, what’s your experience with the independent office of appeals? They don’t seem quite that “independent” to me and so far, I’ve only had one appeals officer who seemed knowledgeable and nice. It’s been a real headache. Interested to hear other people’s experience.

Mid-level associate at a mid-size regional insurance defense firm practicing coverage litigation. Salary is capped b/c my firm only does I.D./coverage and has no direct-hire comm clients. Second round of interviews with a comm lit boutique where I would be the only associate with 5 partners. Other than partner track, salary/benefits, and switching from coverage to general comm lit, what qualities of the move should I be thinking about as I weigh my options? I've never worked at another firm.

Anyone know when Ch. 7 BKs must close by? Is this changed by when there are adversary proceedings (alleged fraudulent transfers made to a bank for CC payments)? Asking for my friend who is unfortunately involved bc of his parents, who are the debtors (he isn’t a defendant or a debtor in this, but the payments were made to a CC in his name—a CC he didnt know was opened in his name).

Its in Texas, and the initial BK filing was made about 23 months ago. TIA!

I'm a third year plaintiff's employment law attorney and I'm looking to move to defense, preferably still in employment law. I received an offer from a midsize firm that primarily focuses on PI with little-to-no employment law practice, so I'll have a bit of a learning curve. Offer is $90k, billable hours of 2100. Is this reasonable? I'm dead-set on leaving my current job, and this would be a $20k pay increase - which makes me believe I'm leaning towards taking it for those reasons only.

I’ve practiced litigation in DC for about 5+ years at a larger plaintiffs’ firm, and am considering a switch to a defense firm. Is there any insight to how many billable hours this would require, and how much time that would actually be? For reference, the firm has a 1900 billable hour requirement and the partner said I would have “no problem” fulfilling that based on the work they have.

I am concerned with fulfilling billable hours requirement. I’m required to hit 2100 hours yearly and I’m at ~1,500 hours and I think I’ll hit 150-180hours this month. What will happen if I don’t hit my targeted amount by the end of my year.
