I would wear a simple clean black /dark colour dress with flats, better to be more formal than not in my experience. Then you can get a better feel as to what’s appropriate and adjust. Black dress you can dress up or down easily
In any case, I found it useful to have spare clothes in my locker that are more formal in case something comes up and you need to dress for it. Eg my business casual now means trousers and sneakers pretty much but I do have a formal suit and flats if I need to meet clients /have an occasion (I work in legal tech)
Some labs don’t allow dresses or skirts unless it’s all the way to your ankles. Dressy pants and blouse if you want to be more formal. I mostly wear jeans, blouse and a sneakers in the lab unless I have a meeting with the higher ups in which case I’ll wear pumps or boots with a comfortable heal. I always keep a pair of sneakers under my desk for lab use.
Hot girl in tech never fails me

I think it depends on whether you're doing lab work or not? For lab work I would avoid wearing heels as it's a hazard and I would say it's not very professional. For your first day I would wear smart trousers, smart shoes/trainers. Then look at what other people are wearing. I think most researchers in a University wear jeans! (from my experience anyway). If you don't work in a lab, then I could wear dress, blazer, etc.
