I have $20k student loans and have been paying $1k per month throughout pandemic to lower the balance. Would you continue to do this? I could pay them off, stop payments in hope of debt relief or keep up with current strategy. TIA

Keep the strategy going. I don't been doing 5k a month and it reinforces rhe behavior of never wanting to be in debt ever again

like

If they're federal student loans I wouldn't pay a cent until they start charging interest again. Sock the money away in something relatively safe that'll earn you a decent yield. Then right before they start charging interest again, take all the money you would have paid + what you earned and make a big lump sum payment.

like

Are they currently interest free? If so I'd pay a HYSA $1k/mo then pay a lump sum later when you've given up on the government paying them for you or they start charging interest.

like

Depends how salty you will be if debt relief actually happens and you’ve already cleared your balance

like

Inflation will inflate it away if you can find all sorts of way to have a near 0 interest on it with government deferrals.

like

What's your interest rate? I personally have no interest in paying mine off quickly at 2%

Government is giving you a free loan right now… I’d invest it.

I just hit my lean fire number but am hesitating to pull the trigger, so was hoping to run it by people smarter than me:

- I have a few rentals that bring in ~$1800/mo cash flow, taxes are negligible, Capex incl.
- My paper assets will bring in ~$1200/mo at 3% draw
- I get free Healthcare at the VA
- No plans on kids
- My expenses haven't topped $30k/yr ever
- I could always reenter the workforce if needed (albeit probably not in consulting)

Please point out the flaws here, what am I missing?
