Also, you probably would benefit from counseling too in addition to getting help with diagnosis and medication. My ADHD was also seeping into my life and I would shut down when stressed. I wouldn’t have gotten better just on medication changes alone. I worked with a therapist who had a specialized practice with ADHD and the tools I learned from her really helped.
Absolutely. Thank you for suggesting it. I am looking for providers in my city. I had awful insurance before and just could not afford out of pocket cost I’m making it a priority now.
Try to go to a psychiatrist that specializes in ADHD if you can. I was in a similar boat and when I went to the specialist, it made a world of difference both in terms of the screening/questionnaire testing process and in terms of not immediately dismissing me and making me feel heard/seen. I used the website zocdoc and put my location and provider information and started browsing the reviews for each doctor on there. You can even book your appointment online, which was always a struggle for me. Feel free to dm me if you have any questions
I kept getting dismissed by PCPs and therapists too, so I demanded a referral to a neuropsych specialist. Lo and behold, the detailed testing I got there confirmed ADHD. I then took those results to a psychiatrist specifically experienced with ADHD, instead of wasting more of my time and money on generalized providers.
It can also be helpful to speak with your parents about your childhood and what symptoms were probably present but over looked then - if you were smart a lot of times symptoms get dismissed bc you’re not “impaired” but then come to light as an adult - and sadly lots of doctors are still of the belief that you must have had symptoms present in childhood in order to get a diagnosis
I’m absolutely miserable and making mistakes all day every day because I can’t focus on anything. When the criticism comes, I can’t focus on anything else and absolutely shut down. It’s seeped into my home life and I just want to be a functioning person again.
Same here. Go to a psychiatrist and they can probably help better and make it more enjoyable.
Thank you all so much. I am going to take your advice and remain persistent in this pursuit. And I’m 100% open to the answer being hey, it’s not ADHD, but I just want to learn what’s going on so I can get better
I highly recommend a psychiatrist or neuro-psych to complete a larger assessment. What you learn could be really helpful besides the benefit of getting a proper diagnosis.
I learned that I’m “so so” IQ wise (being tested before starting medication) but my visual memory is crazy good. This was astounding because I felt like I couldn’t remember anything.
Once I knew I was a visual learner I started incorporating color into my studying and I use color in my work now. I switched between several colors of pens when I was working on a case this evening, for instance. It helps my brain stay engaged and keep things sorted out in my mind.
It was a huge boost in confidence to know my memory was great and the push I needed to know I could do really well if I could get the ADHD under control.
There are other executive functioning disorders, too. Could be several different things. So, getting the correct diagnosis is key. A primary care physician likely won’t have the time or focused training to do the testing to tease everything apart.
Good luck with your search.
