Anyone can tell you why something is going to fail. The real trick is to figure out how you can help something succeed. Being a CD isn’t about criticizing everything that comes across your desk. That’s not your job. And “that’s not doing it for me” is not creative direction. You’re not a tastemaker or a critic. You’re there to make your teams ideas better.

I think the biggest challenge for a lot of CDs are they are expected to be able to manage people but are rarely trained to do so. And, the person who put them in the position were never taught how to either.

More agencies need to prioritize effective leadership and be willing to invest in it. This should never be a trial by fire, you’ll figure it out. I always prioritize leadership training over promotions and will not give someone management responsibilities if they are not prepared to manage people. Being good at being a creative director is only part of what makes someone ready for that role.
