Went through a fitting back in November for irons and wedges. My fitter gave me an option of going with the GW in the set or with a Vokey to match my other wedges. At the end of the day, it is all about having the proper distance gapping between clubs and what you feel comfortable with (more forgiveness with the GW in the set or prefer the look/feel/performance of a traditional wedge).
I ended going with 4-PW and wedges in 50°, 54°, and 58° as I prefer the look and feel of a traditional wedge. I seem to get a fairly consistent gapping between clubs based on a recent indoor range session on Trackman, but I won’t hesitate to go get the GW in the set if the 50° doesn’t perform well once I get on the course.
This was awesome and exactly what I was looking for. Thank you!
I got one because my PW and SW had a 40 yard difference and I’m terrible swinging at 50-70%. It’s helped me a bunch.
It's all about filling a gap.
So for me roughly... 58*- 105, 54*- 115, GW*-125, PW-140.
If I didn't have the GW, it'd be an issue because I have a lot of shots in the 125-140 range so it's helpful to me. My full bag fitting last year was really helpful.
Generally a gap wedge that’s part of a set will be much more forgiving. Buying for example, a vokey wedge separate from your set, regardless of loft (ie whether it’s a gap wedge, lob wedge, etc) give you a lot more options to play with depending on how you like to play different shots (eg, how much bounce, what grind, and then loft)
I’m a pretty decent player (+ index) and I’ve done a fitting with Bob Vokey a few years ago and from his perspective the most important aspect in fitting a wedge is finding the grind that’s best for you and your swing. This really requires an outdoor fitting on a grass range. Once you find the grind where you get the best turf interaction, then you can move to finding the loft that’s best for your gapping purposes.
If you’re a 10+ handicap I might say just go with the set for convenience knowing that if you’re planning to try to get better at this game then your swing is going to change and you can look at the more custom/specific options once you have a better idea of how you like to use wedges.
