If you don't want to use the direct approach (ALWAYS the best and least likely to be misunderstood method) then just stop answering them,
Give unrelated answers about the weather or just ignore them, saying you're busy or something.
But in cases like this, nothing beats direct and unambiguous communication.
If talking is too confrontational or uncomfortable, send them an email expressing your concerns about both their behaviour and your desire to keep things civil and not let it become a conflict.

Personally I'd probably just give very vague responses so they don't really have much to go off and comment on
